Wroclaw Crew clinch top playoff seed with 35-14 win over Warsaw
The Wroclaw Crew overcame first-half mistakes and a determined Eagles team Saturday afternoon in Warsaw to come away with a 35-14 victory that guaranteed them the number one seed for the playoff tournament. The win was the eighth of the season for the Crew against no losses, leaving them one game shy of perfection.
The Eagles, who locked in the third playoff seed due to other results over the weekend, were the better team in the first quarter. Though they punted on the game’s opening possession, the Eagles intercepted Crew quarterback Justin Walz on his first two drives. The first pick, courtesy of Ryan Lockard, set up the only score of the quarter, a 40-yard strike from Roman Iwanski to Jeremy Dixon.
The Crew took the lead in the second quarter with two quick touchdowns, the second coming on a 25-yard pass from Walz to Mark Philmore. Warsaw had an answer on the following kickoff, however, when Dixon ran 95 yards through the coverage team for a return touchdown that tied the game at 14 at the half.
The second half belonged to the Crew, however, as they went ahead in the third quarter on a short touchdown run by Jakub Placzek, his second of the game. They put the game out of reach in the fourth with another Philmore reception and a run by Walz to seal it. Still, it was not Walz’s best day, as he was picked twice by both Lockard and Logan Michael Smyth.
The Eagles already know their playoff fate, which is a road game against the Wroclaw Devils in the semifinals. They will therefore be able to rest some players in their season finale, on June 18 at home against the Bielawa Owls. The Crew can also rest before they host the other semifinal, although they will want to defeat Kozly Poznan in Wroclaw on June 19 to wrap up their unbeaten campaign.
