Xavier Glenn scores five TD's as Wroclaw pounds Spartans 56-6
With a new coaching staff and several new players dotting the roster, the Wroclaw Devils opened their 2013 season on Saturday afternoon with a 56-6 home victory over the Warsaw Spartans. American running back Xavier Glenn punctuated Wroclaw's arrival on the Topliga scene by scoring five times, as the Devils handed the Spartans their largest PLFA defeat ever.
The Devils jumped all over Warsaw in the first quarter, scoring 27 points in the opening frame. Dawid Tarczynski started things off with a 3-yard touchdown reception, and Glenn had two short touchdown runs in the quarter. In between his compatriot's scores, linebacker Clifford Perryman took an interception back 33 yards for a touchdown that gave Wroclaw a 20-0 lead before four minutes had expired in the game.
Mexican quarterback David Orozco played well for Val Gunn's team, throwing for three touchdown passes in the first half. His 26-yarder to Grzegorz Mazur in the second quarter was followed by a 1-yard toss to Glenn that made the score 40-0 at halftime. The highlight of the game came in the third quarter, however, when Orozco pitched the ball back to Glenn, who tiptoed all the way up the right sideline for what went down officially as an 88-yard touchdown run.
The only real negative on the afternoon for the Devils was their penchant from committing penalties. Four pass interference calls and the same number of personal fouls kept Warsaw drives alive in the second half, setting up a surprisingly dramatic finish. The Spartans, who had not yet scored in nearly 144 minutes of Topliga play, faced fourth down deep in Devils territory as the final seconds ticked down. Tomasz Znidericz took the snap at the four-yard line and fired into a crowd just inside the end zone, where Adrian Sawicki reached up between defenders and snared the ball for the Spartans' first points of the season.
Both teams will take to the road for their next games. The Spartans, who now share the Topliga cellar with the AZS Silesia Rebels at 0-3, will travel to Poznan to face a Kozly team that scored its first victory of the season on Sunday. The Devils, meanwhile, will look to make it 2-for-2 for 2013 when they travel to Zaglebie to play the Steelers.
