Gdynia comes back from long journey to Bedzin with 42-7 victory over Steelers
The Gdynia Seahawks traveled to Bedzin on Saturday looking to start another winning streak, just a week after having their record 15-game run snapped in Wroclaw. They had no trouble doing it, getting off to a 35-0 first-half lead en route to a 42-7 victory over the Zaglebie Steelers Interpromex. Ferni Garza threw for four touchdowns in the victory for Gdynia.
Garza is emerging as every bit the stat monster that his predecessor, Kyle McMahon, was. Garza, who came into the weekend as the only passer with double-digit touchdowns this season, has now accumulated an incredible 22 scoring throws in just 7 games. Gawel Pilachowski, second only to Jamal Schulters in touchdown runs, added two more to his total to give him 11 for the season.
Pilachowski started the scoring with a 1-yard dive in the first quarter. Garza extended the lead a few minutes later with a 36-yard touchdown pass to Lukasz Placzek. The Seahawks went up 27-0 in the second quarter with an encore by those same three players. This time Pilachowski went in from 6-yards out, and Placzek followed him with an 18-yarder for his second touchdown catch of the game. Garza then hit Marcin Bluma with a 35-yard touchdown pass to make it 35-0 at halftime.
Zaglebie got on the board in the third quarter, putting together a drive that ended with a 1-yard touchdown run by quarterback Travis Taylor. Time wound down quickly in the second half, and the only other points scored after the break came on Garza's fourth touchdown pass, a 49-yarder to Pawel Fabich.
The Seahawks improved their record to 6-1 ahead of a bye week. They will return to action on June 1, hosting the rapidly-improving Kozly Poznan at the National Rugby Stadium in Gdynia. The Steelers, now with a record of 2-4, will not have the luxury of the bye, as they will be at the Wroclaw Devils on May 25 for the make-up of a game that was postponed early in the season.
